Kangaroo Dundee by Chris 'Brolga' Barnes with James Knight

Kangaroo Dundee
If you caught the recent two series of documentaries about Chris Barnes - who rejoices in the nickname of 'Brolga', a type of stork and a reference to his long legs - then this book is a must as you'll probably still be experiencing withdrawal symptoms. If you didn't see either series, the book is still a must-read which will fuel your desire to make sure you don't miss the next one, and to maybe play catch-up TV ...
The book chronicles Brolga's life to date, from childhood through to setting up his own Kangaroo Sanctuary and baby roo rescue, and makes for an absorbing read - along the way you pick up all sorts of fascinating nuggets of information, whether it's about the amazing journey the babies make at birth to reach the safety of their mothers' pouch to tips on how to keep a baby roo alive until you can get it to a rescue centre or wildlife carer. The man is truly amazing, and has done a phenomenal job so far, considering the odds against him succeeding and the lack of support received from either local tourism (read the book to find out - shame on you Alice Springs!) and the obstacles put in his way by Wildlife and Parks. If it doesn't have you checking out the FB page or website (or both) and dipping into your pocket for a spare pound or two, then you have a heart of stone ...
A mention really also ought to be made of ghostwriter James Knight, who has done a terrific job of ensuring that the book captures essence of Brolga perfectly!
